Sunday, my pastor did not preach. The ministers always do a great job filling in so that didn’t throw me off. What did throw me off was that bright light of understanding that came early in the sermon. Even in the minister’s nervousness, he clarified something for me that I never understood about myself until that moment, sitting in the balcony of CCC.

Coming from Ephesians 3:14-19, he stated, we must pray for strength to understand God’s love for us, the love that surpasses our knowledge, love so great that we need help to understand and grasp it.

For years, when I prayed, I prayed for strength. I never understood why because I resented my strength. It was never an intended prayer. The words would just come out. I felt that God was building me up to be an ox to bear burden, after burden, after burden. They never ended; one rolled into the next. And I would continue to hear the words, God, give me strength come out of my mouth in prayer. But all of that strength that He guided me to pray for was the covering that no one else could provide for me when I needed it the most.

I know my God.

And it’s because of all of that strength that I prayed for. And if no one else in this life covers me in love and in prayer as my mother did in her life, I know it is because God knows my strength. He put it there. And because of the strength that He planted in me, I know His love for me. I may never fully understand the full depth and breadth but I am clear on this absolute in my life. He is. And I’m blessed.

This year has taught me so many lessons, pained me in so many ways and, in the process, forced growth in me that I would not have otherwise welcomed.

This picture is of my grandmother. When I was born, my father looked at me and said I was her spitting image. Everyone has stories of her “temperament” and I am grateful that my parents saw fit to structure me and my siblings relationship with her so that our interaction with her was always filled with mutual love and concern.

In this new phase of loving and embracing me, as I am, I know that the fiber of her being is interwoven in the cloth of my existence. My knitting and crocheting, my squinty hard looks that make folk uncomfortable at times and my love of flora, I owe to you, Grandma. Even though my green thumb hasn’t kept a gardenia bush alive, yet!, the scent will always recall porch swinging next you and pies on top of the refrigerator.

It’s official: Soul Train is rolling into the Smithsonian. The museum just announced plans to add memorabilia from the show’s 37-year-long run to its collection. I’ll be studying some of YouTube’s Soul Train offerings to celebrate.

listening to ledisi radio on pandora and this shuffled on, feel good music :). from june til sept, i was in a christian music space. i couldn’t listen to anything else for any length of time (don’t trip, some of their beats & rhymes are better than what’s on radio) and it kept me sane. it’s nice, now, to be back in the r&b zone. it was a hard year and it’s almost done!
